In today’s interview, we catch up with Prescott, Arizona’s Chloe Woodruff of the Stan’s-Pivot Pro Team to chat Rio Olympics, race season preparation, and Arizona trails!
MBAA: You had a busy 2016 including the Olympics in Rio, how did you stay focused?
Chloe: It’s all perspective. I felt very privileged to be able to focus so intently on a singular goal through the whole season. I think the more fair question to ask any Olympian or individual going for the team is how their spouse, their coach, and/or their family faired through the whole ordeal. I was able to keep focused because I had some incredible people and companies around me for support. And I found out that the “I’m going to the Olympics” card is a pretty good one to use if you’re wanting to pass along some responsibility. 🙂 So I have a lot of gratitude towards those who let me stay so focused this year.
MBAA: What is your favorite race, and why?
Chloe: The Olympic mountain bike race because…the OLYMPICS! For the first time ever, that’s an easy question to answer. But I have to mention that I love racing in front of my home crowds so the Whiskey Off-Road is right up there.
MBAA: You recently outfitted a sprinter van for your travels. Is van life all it’s cracked up to be? 🙂
Chloe: Ha! While it’s not a very popular thing to say right now, I’m not so sure I’m sold on the whole #vanlife thing. A year ago we bought a partially outfitted Sprinter as a race rig and it’s been the perfect vehicle for us in a very practical way. The fridge and napping surface are my favorite things. But I’m not sure I could live out of the van for any extended period of time…or even a weekend? 🙂
MBAA: What’s your favorite trail in Arizona, and why?
Chloe: The Arizona Trail from Picket Post to Gila River. Because it’s rugged and beautiful and makes you confront everything that makes the Sonoran Desert such a unique and inhospitable environment. And it’s a badass mountain bike trail.
MBAA: Off-season, do you take any time off the bike? What activities do you do?
Chloe: I took a pretty long break this year and even raced in Prescott’s 8km Turkey Trot. I had to train for it so I could actually run that far!
MBAA: How do you prepare for the coming season? Keep the routine the same, or mix it up?
Chloe: We always mix things up a bit. That’s one thing that makes TJ such a good coach; he knows how to balance sticking to what we know works, and making small changes so I can train more specifically and stay mentally fresh. Right now I’m training on a Pivot Mach 6 quite a bit which is new (and totally awesome) territory for me.”
MBAA: Do you remember your first race? Were you nervous?
Chloe: My first race was the 2002 24 Hours of Moab on a Jr Women’s relay team. I don’t remember a lot of nerves although I do remember crying through one of my night laps. Even though the night lap experience totally kicked my butt, I put together a strong morning lap and all was right with the world again. I am still not a fan of night riding.
MBAA: What advice would you give to an intermediate racer looking to improve?
